Work on its line 4 continues apace Athens Metro where work is currently underway on 25 of the line’s total of 26 positions.

In 20 places, the preliminary work has already been completed.

The Metropolitan (TBM) “Athens” from Katehaki has exceeded two kilometers in length and in about 15 days it is expected to be at Zografou station. It is estimated that it will fully complete the construction work of the tunnel by the end of 2025. The Metropondikas (TBM) “Win” it is expected to be at the first Alsos Veikou station in about a month. It is expected to fully complete the tunnel construction work by the end of 2026.

The design includes provision for future intersections and extensions and is dimensioned for a passenger load greater than that expected in 2050.

Also, it is important to emphasize that the project will contribute to the environmental/urban upgrade of the areas where the new Metro stations will operate, with the economic upgrade and value of real estate and shops. In collaboration with Anaplasi S.A. eight (8) architectural competitions were implemented for the correct spatial and compositional configuration of the squares above the Metro stations of the new Line 4. Thus, important public spaces and squares, such as Kolonaki Square, Kypseli Square and Exarcheion Square, will be definitively formed based on the result of the design proposals of prominent architectural offices.

Extension to Ilion

The extension that has started in Attica is that of Line 2 to Ilion, about 4 km long with 3 stations (Palatiani, Ilion and Agios Nikolaos). At the same time, the expansion and modernization of the Eleonas train station as well as the construction of an underground parking area have been included in the same project. The first stage of the competition has been completed and the second stage will soon follow. The estimated start of construction is 2026 and the start of operation in 2031.

Future expansions

Extension design is another important part of the company’s object. In Athens, the person in charge of this level of planning is the OASA. At the present time, he is implementing the new transportation study of Attica, from which the planning, feasibility and sustainability of the extensions of the Metro network will be derived.

They have been studied by Hellenic Metro in a preliminary stage the extension of Line 2 south to Glyfada and the extension of the Metro to Kallitheaensuring the connection of the SNFCC (Cultural Center Stavros Niarchos Foundation) with the Metro network.

Extension of Line 4 west, from the station, has been investigated “Alsos Veikou” to the municipalities of Ilio and Petroupoli, which will pass through the municipalities of Nea Ionia and Nea Philadelphia, with the possibility of transferring to Lines 1 and 2. Similarly, the extension of Line 4 north, from the “Katehaki” station to Marousi, Pefki and Lykovrysi , with the possibility of transferring to Line 1.

Also, a branch of Line 4 from the “Evangelismos” station to PYRKAL, with networking on Lines 2 and 3, has been studied. The branch will form part of the future Line 5 to Haidari. Finally, the extension of Line 1 to the north, from the “Kifisia” station, to Nea Erythraia and the National Highway (Varymbobi junction) is being investigated.
