According to the UN High Representative for human rights, in November 2023 it was decided that Greece would join the visit program of the Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture for 2024. In July the country was informed of the upcoming visit and in August 7, with an official letter, the UN informs about the members of the committee and the dates of the visit. This is clearly a regular and planned one-year visit and in no case an emergency.
Also, the Subcommittee evaluates not only the Police, detention centers and PRO.KE.KA, but also immigrant accommodation structures, mental health structures, detention centers, unaccompanied minors structures, social solidarity structures, etc.
Finally, in its announcement, the UN emphasizes that the Subcommittee is visiting all the member states that have ratified the relevant framework for the prevention of torture, and it is emphasized that it has already made similar visits to other EU member states. and its purpose is to bring the relevant authorities of the country into contact with the global context on the issues”.
