The Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Konstantinos Tzavellas the Minister of Rural Development and Food visited this morning, Kostas Tsiarasto whom, according to information, he handed over a file with data concerning issues of faulty implementation of the measures biosecurity for him containment and eradication of her disease sheep and goat pox.

During the briefing, it was pointed out that certain practices may create conditions that make it difficult to implement the prescribed measures, undermining the containment effort her sheep and goat pox.

It was also emphasized that full compliance with the rules biosecurity is critical for her animal health protection and its safeguarding agricultural productionas any deviation may have implications for the primary sector and the national economy.

In this context, and in accordance with the provisions of article 285 of the Criminal Code, further investigation of the case by the Court was requested.

As Mr. Tsiaras points out, in the communication he submitted to Mr. Prosecutor, the biosecurity measures that have been announced are difficult to implement when:

  • dead animals are not declared, so that they can be landfilled,
  • illegal movements of herds take place,
  • an unapproved vaccine is illegally trafficked and used;
  • and when public statements by politicians or agricultural cooperative executives indirectly encourage non-compliance with the measures.

Mr. Tsiaras added that according to the EOF, there is no approved and licensed vaccine for her goat pox in the EU. The preparations on the market come from third countriescontain live virus and can lead to confusion between vaccinated and diseased animalsresulting in the killing of entire herds, based on EU Regulation 687/2020.

In addition, Regulation 361 states that products from vaccination zones they cannot get out of themstriking, of course, exports and productssymbols like the slice.

Finally, the responsible minister emphasized that “the confusion caused by irresponsible statements and illegal practices do not only affect the breedersbut one entire sector of strategic importance for the countrysuch as animal husbandry”.
