The survey highlights the need for improvement in public transport
The Institute of Sustainable Mobility & Transport Networks (IMET/EKETA) carried out a particularly revealing research, which highlights important aspects of public transport, especially regarding the use of taxis.
Participants in the survey, which was conducted in collaboration with fyi.news and supported by Uber, were the residents of Athens and Thessaloniki, the two largest cities in Greece.
According to the survey, public transport is generally rated low, while taxis play an important role in getting people to their destination.
Research shows that while taxis may not be the most popular choice for daily commutes, they are crucial in connecting residents to key points in the city.
Specifically, in Thessaloniki, 27% rely on taxis for transfers to and from the airport and train station, while in Athens, 6% choose taxis for transfers to the terminals.
The findings also show that residents of both cities prefer using ride-sharing apps due to convenience.
27% in Thessaloniki and 39% in Athens rely on apps for comfort and practicality.
Comfort received a rating of 3.8 out of 5 in Thessaloniki and 3.5 in Athens, while convenience received 3.8 and 3.6 out of 5 respectively. However, costs and accessibility for people with disabilities were rated lower, indicating the need for improvement in these areas.
Regarding the pricing of the service, 52% of participants in Thessaloniki and 51% in Athens express a strong preference for transparency in pricing per route. Flexible demand-based pricing also gained significant traction, with 40% in Thessaloniki and 49% in Athens preferring it.
The research highlights the need to improve public transport and highlights the potential for taxis and ride-sharing services to work together to create a more integrated urban sustainable mobility network in synergy with other modes of transport. IMET/EKETA undertook the implementation of the research in the context of its policy for the performance of its research activities and research results in society and the economy.
The results of the research demonstrate the need for Mass Transportation in Athens and Thessaloniki to provide high-quality services to passengers and at the same time to be able to be used in a unified environment of sustainable mobility, where the user, depending on the needs and purposes of their movement, will can easily and quickly use a combination of buses, subways, trams, public transport and taxis.
This requires a new integrated planning and cooperation between providers and transport project operators. The collaboration of the agencies in this research highlights exactly how we need to move towards the future of combined, connected and smart urban mobility.
As the transportation landscape continues to evolve, at Uber we look forward to making a positive contribution to the cities we serve and working toward solutions that benefit all residents.
Uber remains committed to addressing these concerns by offering a transportation solution that is not only convenient and comfortable, but also safe and inclusive.
In our endeavor, we constantly seek to improve our services so that our users enjoy a superior and satisfying experience.
With our advanced app technology, Uber is able to complement existing transportation options and meet the evolving needs of urban commuters.
