“We will not leave unpunished sworn doctors who insult the medical body, which consistently serves the health system and the patient,” said the president of the Athens Medical Association (ISA) George Patoulis regarding disclosures about illegal drug prescriptions.

In a letter to the health minister Adonis Georgiadis the ISA requests to be informed about the details of the doctors involved in its area of responsibility, in order to deal with the matter, exercising its responsibilities under the law and the Code of Medical Ethics.

During an interview, the minister referred to “at least 100 suspected cases of over-prescription at the expense of EOPYY” and as ISA states in his letter, it is not “over-prescription. This is pure fraud and shames us all. Therefore, we ask you to inform us of the details of the doctors involved in our association’s area of responsibility when you deem it appropriate, so that the ISA can also be contacted.”

He adds that “these doctors are a sad but tiny minority, “a very small fraction of doctors in front of thousands of doctors who do their job diligently”, who “work hard to support the country’s Health System”. He concludes that “for the honor of many, and not only doctors, such behaviors must be punished exemplary”
