Bar da Dona Onça keeps stroganoff on the menu and goes back in protest against war in Ukraine

The protest against the war in Ukraine lasted less than 24 hours. After saying on Tuesday (8) that it would remove its famous stroganoff from the menu, Bar da Dona Onça went back and announced, through social media, that the dish remains on the menu.

The house had decided to stop preparing the recipe as a way of drawing attention to the confrontation, which began on February 24, with Russian troops invading Ukrainian territory. The idea was to return with the item only when the war was over.

In a publication made on Instagram this Wednesday (9), the restaurant led by chef Janaína Rueda in the central region of São Paulo said that the dish will remain on the menu and that, during the month of March, the proceeds from the sale will be reverted to the Pão do Povo da Rua project. Stroganoff costs R$76.

Pão do Povo da Rua is a social project that delivers food in the central region of the capital to people who live on the street or are in a vulnerable situation. They also have a social bakery in Bom Retiro. Rueda has been working as a cook on the project since last year.

In addition to donating the value of sales to the organization, the chef will deliver warm stroganoff to the homeless in Praça Princesa Isabel, also in the center, once a week, during the month of March.

Bar da Dona Onça was not the only restaurant in the capital to use the menu to protest – albeit in a symbolic way – against the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Other houses, such as Piselli and Tadashii, have joined the global wave of cancellation in the country led by Vladimir Putin, changing recipe names and switching brands used in the kitchen.

With that, drinks like the trendy moscow mule were renamed, while Russian vodka left the shelves and was replaced by the Swedish Absolut.
