They are in the hands of two primary court prosecutors of Athens 21 lawsuits by politicians, which are against the two previously protected witnesses in the Novartis case, retrieved from the archiveafter their declassification as witnesses of the public interest by the Financial Prosecutor’s Office.
The lawsuits will be investigated by the two prosecutors with urgent procedures, as well the statute of limitations for offenses is visible. And this is because in November 2025 the 8-year period will be completed and the statute of limitations for the first sued acts will expire and in February 2026 for the last ones.
The two former protected witnesses are expected to be called for explanations by the prosecutors in the next period.
The decision “station” – as it was characterized – of the Economic Prosecutor’s Office to remove the protection status of the two protected witnesses of the case, gives a new dimension to the case.
The removal of witness protection is a recent arrangement that has emerged since the change of the Criminal Code and it has only been in effect for five months, since last May, and since then it has given the competent prosecutor the opportunity to review the protection status and decide either on its removal or on its continuation.
