Torrential rains brought by a cold front moving along the southern and eastern parts of the Iberian Peninsula caused the flash floods
At least 51 people have died in the flash floods sweeping the region of Valencia and Albacete, in the southeast Spainafter yesterday’s torrential rains that left roads and cities submerged in water.
The region of Valencia and the Spanish Mediterranean coast in general often experience in autumn the weather phenomenon of “Gotta freak» (cold drop), causing sudden and extremely heavy floodssometimes for several days.
The torrential rains it brought cold frontmoving along the southern and eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, caused the flash and deadly floods while Spain’s meteorological service AEMET warned that the rains will continue at least until tomorrow Thursday.
According to AEMET’s estimate yesterday, Valencia was hit hardest by the storm, with 180mm of rain in less than 12 hours.
In Alora, the amount of rain, according to AEMET, reached 160 millimeters today.
Due to the weather phenomenon, some areas such as Turis and Utiel recorded 200 mm of rain.
Spain’s meteorological service declared a red alert in Valencia and raised the alert to the second highest level in some parts of Andalusia.
Scientists warn that extreme weather events such as heat waves and storms are becoming more intense and more frequent due to climate change.
