The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, began his visit to the martyred village by laying a wreath at the monument to the fallen of Kandano.

The visit took place under draconian security measures, with police forces scattered in the area and cars being removed from roads near the village square.

The German president spoke to survivors who raised the issue of reparations, talking about justice that needed to be done for the crimes of the Germans.

“80 years ago you executed our parents, now you are executing us for the second time,” another descendant of a victim of the occupation was heard saying to Mr. Steinmeier.

The Metropolitan of Kissamos and Selinos Amfilochios, said to the German president “Your country not only did not stand by our country during the years of the memorandums, but pushed it to the IMF. And because you told the president of the Hellenic Republic that you are committed to your historical responsibility, the German reparations and the occupation loan are a commitment to the historical responsibility of your country.”
