The average consumer who is an employee with an income of 1,300 euros per month cannot pay subsidies to the producers of “green” energy and it is not socially fair for a producer of energy in hours when its price is zero to offset energy that costs 250 euros per megawatt hour.

This was pointed out by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Thodoros Skylakakis, responding today in the context of the 6th Renewable & Storage Forum to a question regarding the abolition of RES subsidies as well as the net metering system. “Let’s not forget that from the subsidies that applied in previous years, we have accumulated a bill of around 800-900 million euros per year. We must avoid absurdities in order to have good investments that benefit first of all the investors themselves,” the minister said.

Mr. Skylakakis emphasized that the end of subsidies means that investments will be accelerated in the areas where there is a need. He also referred to the government’s plan to increase electricity demand which includes inter-island interconnections and strengthening cross-border interconnections for energy exports, development of storage, harnessing RES for hydrogen production and water desalination.
