The president of the Athens Bar Association, Dimitris Vervesos, stated in a press conference that if the lawyers continue to remain unpaid by the Asylum Service of the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, then they will continue to abstain from this service.

In particular, the president and vice-president of the DSA, Dimitris Vervesos and Michalis Kalantzopoulos, respectively, and councilor Chrysoula, mentioned in a press conference the major problems faced by the lawyers who provide their services to the Asylum Registry, the main one being their non-payment for a year. It was reported that the lawyers providing their services to the Asylum Registry have not been paid since November 2023 until today, despite the fact that the funds come overwhelmingly from the European Union, but despite all this the ministry “chooses to it prioritizes payments of contractors and suppliers and not of the lawyers who provide, as the Greek state is obliged to, based on the international conventions ratified by the country, free legal assistance in the second degree to foreign asylum seekers”.

In addition, the lawyers employed by the Asylum Registry, “are required to pay VAT, insurance contributions and income tax on amounts that have not been paid to them and are even forced to pay outstanding debts to the State and EFKA in order to issue the requested by the information service”.

It was also reported that during a meeting of the Athens Bar Association delegation with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, Manos Logothetis, the latter pledged that the dues to the lawyers would be paid immediately, without to date the exact time of their payment being set.
