In response to the execution of German-Iranian Yamshid Sharmad in Iran, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that it is closing the country’s three consulates general in Germany.

According to the ministry’s announcement, these are the Iranian diplomatic missions in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich.

The Iranian embassy in Berlin remains open. The German decision also means that 32 consular officials will have to leave Germany immediately, unless they hold German citizenship. Previously, the Iranian charge d’affaires had been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We have expressed our strong protest against the actions of the Iranian regime and we reserve the right to take further action,” the German ministry said in a related announcement on the “X” platform.

At the same time, the German ambassador in Tehran, Markus Potchel, presented himself to the Iranian foreign minister in order to express the German government’s “strong protest” over the murder of Yamshid Sharmad, who was convicted of “terrorist action”.

So far, the German government has resorted to such a punitive measure only in the case of Russia, after the invasion of Ukraine.
