Reportage by Makis Synodinos

It seems a matter of time before we say bread’s as bread increases in the price of flour and cereals due to the war in Ukraine are explosive.

According to Mr. Mousios Michalis, president of the Hellenic Bakers’ Federation, the price rally observed in recent days in the price of soft flour, which is the main ingredient for the production of bread and bakery products, is out of control.

Indicatively, last year it showed an increase of 40% while today it is 60%. And if one considers that for our needs as a country we import 80% of the cereals of which 20% we import from Ukraine 5-10% from Russia, according to the president in the coming days it is very likely to see the price of bread over one euro.

The large increase in flour and cereals plus the increases in energy but also in the other raw materials used in bakeries and confectioneries have reached many small and medium enterprises in despair.

As Mr. Mousios characteristically says, the expenses have almost tripled with the result that many entrepreneurs in the sector have reached the point of leaving the state obligations (VAT, tax, insurance contributions) unpaid in order to pay for gas, electricity and of course to be able to buy the raw materials.
