Over 1700 sheep and goats expected to be put to death after the new case of smallpox which was located in one of the largest units in the prefecture.
According to TheNewspaper.gr, the unit belongs to the chairman of the prefecture’s breeders, Giorgos Terzakis.
At the same time, intense concern prevails in Magnesia as the health and veterinary services were put on alert again after the confirmation of a new case of smallpox in a livestock unit near the settlement of Soros, in the wider area of ​​Dimini. The new case became known when the local breeder, spotting suspicious symptoms in his herd, immediately notified the veterinary services of the Regional Unit of Magnesia and Sporades. A team from the Veterinary Service rushed to the unit to take samples, and a few hours later came the confirmation of the case.
There are at least five other units near this facility, which increases the risk of the disease spreading. The area has been put on alertwith the breeders fearing the spread of smallpox in their herds and requesting immediate protection measures. The health authorities have already started control and isolation procedures for the affected animals, while checks are expected on other herds in the area within the next few hours.
