On Tuesday, November 12, the body of Yiannis Boutaris will be on display on Tuesday, November 12. The civil funeral of the former mayor of Thessaloniki will take place on Tuesday at 12 noon.

“Yiannis Boutaris, one of the most emblematic personalities of Thessaloniki, passed away at the age of 82. Mayor of the city from 2011 to 2019, after winning two consecutive municipal election contests, he was unconventional throughout his political career and brought a new air to the Local Government shaping the modern identity of Thessaloniki. Born in 1942, scion of the Boutaris family, identified with the wine industry, Giannis Boutaris was a well-known entrepreneur in the wine sector, with the family business “Ktima Kyr-Yiannis” considered today one of the leading wine-producing units in Greece.
“He left the company “Boutari” in 1996 and founded the company “Kyr-Yiannis” -with the namesake wines and wineries in privately owned vineyards, in Giannakochori Naoussa and Amyntaio-, which is currently managed by his two sons from the marriage of his life partner Athena, from whom he divorced in 1981 although the couple were to reunite and stay together until the end. He had told in an interview with Protagon: “I am permanently in love with life. I like where I live, I have fun, I like to be with the woman, regardless of whether many call me an asshole. They always called me that. And when I was drinking, they didn’t say Giannis drinks, they said Giannis is a reveler or Giannis is a drunkard. When I drank I wasn’t annoying. I may have been ridiculed but I didn’t bother. Many drink and become whiners or annoying or aggressive. I was rather sweet. Of course, in reality, I was a drunkard. All through the 80’s I was stuck at work but still drinking. When I decided to go to the Detoxification Center I had already decided to return to Athena. She was living with someone and I had things, but I told her I wanted to be with her. He asked me to stop drinking, so I went to the program.
