A new coordination meeting was held today under the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, to evaluate the course of the bad weather “Filippos”. It is reminded that as of Tuesday, March 8, respective meetings are held daily to coordinate all relevant bodies and to deal immediately with any problems.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of National Defense, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, the Minister of Civil Protection, Panagiotis Theodorikakos, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Konstantinos Karamanlis, the Deputy Minister of Interior, Stelios Petsas, the Deputy Minister of Defense Lefikoris and Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas, the General Secretary of Infrastructure, George Karagiannis, the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou and the Deputy GPP, George Karagiannis.
Also participating were the Regional Governors of Attica, George Patoulis, Central Greece, Fanis Spanos, representatives of the Regions of Central Macedonia, Crete, Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the South Aegean. The “present” were also given by the President of KEDE, Dimitris Papastergiou, the President of the Regional Union of Attica Municipalities, George Markopoulos and the Mayor of Athens, Konstantinos Bakogiannis.
During the meeting, the Director of the National Meteorological Service (EMY), Theodoros Kolydas, informed the participants in detail about the evolution of weather phenomena, noting that heavy snowfall is expected tomorrow, Saturday, March 12, in Attica, Greece and Attica. Especially for Attica, the effects are expected to be particularly intense from the first hours of the afternoon.
For this reason, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection addresses strong recommendation to avoid all unnecessary travel, while drivers are advised to be provided with anti-skid chains in Attica, Evia, Fthiotida, Boeotia, central and eastern Peloponnese. It is noted that the recommendation is particularly strong for drivers in all northern and eastern suburbs of Attica, as well as on the main roads leading to northeastern Attica. Relevant checkpoints have been developed by the Traffic Police. More information will be announced by the competent Traffic Directorates.
Furthermore, It was decided that from early tomorrow morning the entry of heavy vehicles on Attiki Odos, as well as in sections of Nea Odos will be prohibited again. More information will be announced by the relevant Traffic Directorates and the concessionaires of the road network management.
Regarding the operation of the means of transport in Atticaaccording to information from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, The OASA will be ready to adjust the bus, electric and tram routes, depending on the local intensity of the phenomenon. It is pointed out that from the beginning of the shift there will be no articulated buses. More information will be announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, as well as by the means of public transport management.
The meeting was also attended by the Chief of General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Alexios Rapanos, the Deputy Chief of Police, Lieutenant General Ioannis Petroutsos, the Deputy Commander of ELAS, , as well as the General Coordination Director of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, Phoebus Theodorou. In addition, representatives of the National Road Network management concessionaires participated (Nea Odos SA / Central Road SA, Moreas SA, Olympia Odos SA, Attikes Diadromes SA), as well as the CEO of HEDNO, Anastasios Manos.
All participants confirmed their full readiness in means, equipment and human resources to deal with any problems from the bad weather. Specifically, the forces of the Fire Brigade, the Greek Police, as well as the Armed Forces, Regions and Municipalities are on standby, where the phenomena are expected to occur, while the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is in constant contact with all agencies for better coordination of all forces.
It is reminded that according to the Updated Extraordinary Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued today, Friday, March 11, 2022, by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the bad weather “Filippos” (“Filippos”) continues to affect the country.
The bad weather that has the main characteristics of the very low temperatures for the season throughout the country, the locally strong frost in northern Greece and the local and at times intermittent heavy snowfall in the eastern mainland and the Aegean, will be maintained until Sunday (13 -03-2022).
Snowfall in more detail:
1. Today, Friday (11-03-2022) will continue in the eastern continents and the Aegean and specifically in eastern Thessaly, the Sporades, eastern Sterea, Evia, eastern and northern Attica, eastern Peloponnese, northern islands and eastern Aegean, the Cyclades and Crete, but will be of low intensity and temporary.
2. Tomorrow, Saturday (12-03-2022) heavy snowfalls in places are expected:
a. In Magnesia, the Sporades and Evia from early in the morning.
b. In Halkidiki from the noon hours until the afternoon.
c. From noon in eastern Sterea (including Attica), the central and eastern Peloponnese and the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of Crete, while it will snow in the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean, the Cyclades and the plains of northern Crete.
3. On Sunday (13-03-2022) the snowfall in most areas from early in the morning will weaken and from noon will stop and only in Crete will continue until Monday (14-03-2022), but not with heavy tensions.
