SKAI’s camera recorded one of the daily routes of the Thessaloniki metro, shortly before the trains were handed over for use by the city’s residents
With time counting down to the launch of the Thessaloniki Metro, on November 30.
Christos Nicolaidis and the camera of SKAI, made the first route, recording exclusive images from the wires, stations and the control center, of this state-of-the-art project, which radically changes the transportation map of Thessaloniki, after decades of waiting.
The trains are already running on the tracks, the stations are ready to welcome passengers, the Thessaloniki metro is counting down to its official opening.
At the front of a train there is no driver, all trains run fully automatically.
The SKAI camera recorded one of the daily routes, shortly before the trains were handed over for use by the city’s residents.
The characteristic of the Thessaloniki metro is that when the train arrives, there is a door that opens so that passengers can enter and exit the metro.
However, this space is a sealed one in relation to the space where the rails exist.
When passengers board and disembark then these doors will be closed, as a result of which there is complete safety and no one is in danger of falling from this space to the space where the train tracks are.
The “brain” of the Thessaloniki metro is the control and operation center. which is also the basis of the whole system.
Given that the trains do not have drivers, from here the complete control of the movement of each train on each line of the Thessaloniki metro takes place.
“The system is the advanced, category 4, the most modern system in the world every second, it finds its position 10 times on all the wires at the same time”, emphasizes Nikos Kouretas, president of “Hellenic Metro”, clarifying that the case with the categorization of the safety of the Thessaloniki metro, for something critical to happen is one in 100,000 years.
18,000 passengers are expected to use the Thessaloniki metro in each direction, every hour of the day.
“At first we will start with 3.5 minutes with 18 trains. Then when the trains are added we will drop to 1.5 minutes. There are the machines from which he can buy a ticket. He can obtain a personalized card from the publishing houses. The ticket is 60 minutes and lasts 70 minutes per hour. When the time passes, he will be able to leave the exit gates with this ticket”, explains Mr. Kouretas.
According to the metro officials, the architecture of each station is adapted to the needs of each space and its history, while the image of the Venizelos station, which will be an open museum for the residents of the city, remains a sealed secret.
The Thessaloniki metro will open its doors to the public on November 30.
