A new procedure for notifying citizens via SMS or email is being put into operation for the timely notification of those who have a license to possess – carry a firearm, the validity of which is about to expire, as announced in order to improve the services provided by the Greek Police.

This is an initiative that offers citizens the opportunity to:

  • timely notification, minimizing the risk of the relevant license expiring without their knowledge,
  • flexibility and simplicity, by receiving a simple message on the mobile phone or e-mail,
  • strengthening of public security, since the legal possession of a weapon is ensured through the timely renewal.

The notifications will be sent twice, specifically the first one one hundred (100) days and the second two (2) days before the license expires.

In order to benefit from the new service, citizens should have registered their mobile phone number or email address in the National Communications Registry (E.M.Ep.) at their own risk.

The retrieval of the contact information of citizens registered in the National Register of Communications (E.M.Ep.) is done in accordance with the provisions of the relevant Ministerial Decision (Government Gazette B’ 6120/2024) of the Ministry of Digital Governance.

It is noted that the use of the service is fully in accordance with the law and is limited exclusively to sending notifications regarding the expiration of firearms possession-carrying licenses.

In this context, all holders of firearms licenses are invited to register (if they have not already done so) in the E.M.Ep. and register their contact details to ensure their participation in the new service and take advantage of the benefits it provides.

According to the request, the Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Hellenic Police, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Governance, continue to implement innovative solutions to better serve citizens and strengthen public security.
