A new security incident reportedly occurred on Monday afternoon on the railway network at Korinos station in Pieria with two trains moving in the same direction.

According to reports, a suburban train stopped due to a breakdown inside the station, while the Intercity train 57 with the Thessaloniki-Athens route was following on the same line.

According to all reports, the traffic light turned green, instead of red, with the Intercity stopping just 1.5 kilometers from where the train in front had stopped, thanks to the drivers communicating with each other on their cellphones.

In a statement, the OSE states that it is examining all relevant reports for the investigation of the incident, pointing out, however, that signaling and remote control have been operating in this part of the network since August 2023.

“Regarding a publication referring to a near-collision of trains in Pieria, both OSE and ERGOSE with the manufacturing company of the signaling system are very carefully examining all relevant reports with the aim of fully investigating the relevant incident.

It is emphasized that signaling and remote control have been operating in this section of the railway network since August 2023. The specific system has received all the necessary safety certificates as required by the relevant legislation, while it also has the corresponding safe operation certificate issued by RAS.

Given the safe movement of trains guaranteed internationally by the operation of signaling and remote control systems, OSE, ERGOSE and the manufacturing company immediately carry out all the required technical checks as required by the technical manuals of these systems in order to ascertain the exact causes mentioned in the above incident”.
