The 20-meter tall fir comes from a nursery in Taxiarchis, Halkidiki
Athens entered the Christmas mood tonight, as the mayor Haris Doukas lit the Christmas tree in Syntagma Square and gave the trigger to start a series of events in the coming days in the city.
“Let’s all celebrate the magic of Christmas together,” he said to the people, who had filled the square early on and immediately rushed to take the “established” selfies on the tree.
The 20 meter high fir tree comes from a nursery in Taxiarchis of Halkidiki, it arrived in Athens last Thursday, it was decorated with ornaments made from recycled materials, the colorful lanterns are low consumption LEDs and after the holidays the tree will be given to the Academy of Fine Arts to be used as raw material for artistic woodcarving projects for her students.
The decoration of Athens this year is inspired by children’s imagination. Syntagma Square in particular was transformed into a setting taken from classic fairy tales, with elves and heroes such as the Nutcracker.
The lighting of the tree is accompanied by a musical event with Nefeli Fasouli and the Athens Big Band playing Christmas tunes. The presentation has been undertaken by Nancy Zampetoglou and Thanasis Anagnostopoulos.
In the coming days, the detailed program of the festive events of the municipality of Athens will be announced.
