A mother and daughter from Crete were accused of theft, they were arrested and despite the fact that the lawsuit against him was withdrawn, they are still “climbing Calvary”
A fifty-year-old woman, according to a complaint published on neakriti.gr, has been locked up in Istanbul, waiting for a trial to take place for a theft that she claims she did not commit.
The 50-year-old woman from Rethymnon spoke to CRETE TV about the adventure and the trip to Istanbul, which turned into a nightmare.
It all started when a 50-year-old mother and her 22-year-old daughter, together with a friend of theirs, were buying scarves to enter Hagia Sophia last Friday and the woman accidentally put the shopkeeper’s cell phone in her bag.
From there, an incredible Golgotha began for the family.
They were arrested and taken to the detention center where they slept on the floor not knowing what would happen to them.
The 22-year-old daughter spent three days in a hot spot until she was deported, without her mother knowing what had happened to her.
The 50-year-old woman was released but is being held in Turkey awaiting trial, which could take place in months, with her husband asking for state intervention to return her safely to Greece on bail.
Her husband worries every day as the woman seems to be facing health problems as well.
The Turkish businessman withdrew the lawsuit, while according to the case file he also believes that a mistake was made, a fact that can probably be seen from the video footage.
“I’m terrified”
The woman and her husband talked about the never-ending adventure they are experiencing.
The 50-year-old woman from Rethymnon described the difficult times she is going through in Turkey, stressing that she believes that her stay will be extended for a few days there.
“Today I went to the Embassy again, with the intention of paying a cash bond and returning when my court date is set. After 4 hours I called again since they didn’t answer me immediately. I was told that it is being done, however the court must be appointed first. When we know which judge will take over my case we will be able to apply for bail. My lawyer said that maybe we will know in a week. My stay is being extended. I am terrified because I have the feeling that I will be here for a very long time if the request is not accepted.”
In response to a question about what charge she is facing based on the fact that the shopkeeper has withdrawn the lawsuit, Ms. Markopoulou replied that “the prosecutor is not sure if the fact that I took the mobile phone was done on purpose or by mistake, or out of ignorance. We will go to court, because he believes that the complainant was pressured.”
In fact, she added that she did not receive an explanation for the fact that her daughter had to stay in a hot spot for three whole days and was taken to the airport in handcuffs.
“They didn’t explain to me and it was the most painful adventure of my life. The main problem was communication.”
