The war – mainly – in Ukraine and the debate, which has opened for a World War, even for the use of nukes, has caused concern and disturbance all over the planet, with the result that governments of even large states, such as Germany, are proceeding to draw up a plan for the protection of citizens, preparing shelters and informing about the actions to be taken.

Greece is also preparing for every eventuality, however private individuals seem to have taken more…advanced initiatives, building nuclear shelters in case world leaders choose the madness of…destruction. THE Thomas Housosowner of a company specializing in construction nuclear facilitiesrevealed to 100.3 and to Vasilis Koufopoulosthat two nuclear shelter construction projects are already underway in Attica, while there is discussion about one more in the province.

“At the moment we have two active projects in the wider area of Attica and there is also a discussion with a client in the province for the construction of the third shelter”reveals the Thomas Housos and continues:

“From private individuals, of course. They are serious about it. They see the news, but they didn’t have the way. They didn’t know where to turn for quite some time. Because this is not from the last week or the last month. It’s been a long time and they are slowly finding their way and moving forward with the relevant constructions”.

What is involved in building a nuclear shelter?

How many meters underground is a nuclear shelter placed and what is involved in its construction?

“A nuclear shelter can be two meters or much more underground, depending on what one wants to protect. For a typical home shelter, the depth can be two to three meters. It is made of reinforced concrete and includes special doors, which protect against shock waves and radioactivity. So is the ventilation system. It also protects against shock waves with special valves, but it also filters 100% of the air entering the shelter from biochemical agents and radioactive residues. These filters can work for months. It is not something that will work for one day, or for one week and it will have to be changed. They are built to be able to work non-stop for months” explains Mr. Huss.

As for the space available to the individual and his family…

“A typical shelter might have a single room that will house the number of people we want to protect. From there there is no restriction. Something can be built that is like an apartment, just underground and sealed. In other words, this is purely a matter of the needs and specifications that everyone sets.”.

Water and food supplies

“There are specific foods and water, which has a shelf life of 10 years and can be inside the shelter. Regarding the drainage issue, usually in the simple shelters we have a dry toilet or a chemical one in a box, or someone may have set the bar of specifications higher and there is a sealed drainage system.»

But how are the supplies of food and water?

They are made immediately after or even shortly before the construction of the shelter and are placed inside the shelter. However, there is a specific schedule as they have an expiration date of 10 years.

“According to the Greek data, there is no permit for shelter. A bunker is a simple space, a warehouse built to be used for a specific purpose. This is an issue that the state should deal with and perhaps give incentives to the citizens for the construction of the shelters. There is a gap which can be filled with some guidelines from the state. And possibly give some countervailing benefits to building a shelter,” added Mr. Huss.

How much is the… square meter of a nuclear shelter?

“I won’t talk to you about the square, because that is purely a matter of the specifications that everyone sets. A citizen, who wants to build a shelter in a newly built detached house, could calculate an extra cost of around 60 to 70,000 euros. But of course if we transfer it to an apartment building, the cost is shared among 10, 15, 20 owners making it much more accessible.

Also, it is an issue discussed by various citizens, who have old shelters in old single-family houses and want to upgrade them if they meet certain conditions. These spaces can also be built for shelter use. Of course, there should be a study by an engineer. You can’t just walk in and put whatever you want, but in general everything is done and it’s not something that appeals to the very rich.” concluded Mr. Huss.
