In the presence of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and with a speech by the prime minister Kyriakou Mitsotakis its opening ceremony will take place at 12 noon Thessaloniki Metro which will mark the entry into a new era of the city and its public transport.

The delivery from prime minister of the Metro project for use will be made at Pylaia train stationwhere the state-of-the-art control center for its safe operation is also installed.

After the completion of the ceremony the gates of the Metro will be opened for the public and until Tuesday, December 3, passenger movements will be free. From Wednesday 4/12, a ticket of 0.60 euros will be valid, the same for the Metro and city buses, which is reduced by 30 minutes from the 0.90 euros it costs today on city buses. The cost of the monthly travel card will amount to 16 euros.

The main line of the Thessaloniki Metro, delivered today, is 9.6 kilometers long, from the new Railway Station to New Switzerland, with two independent single-track tunnels, 13 stations and the whole route takes 17 minutes. It is estimated that it will serve 250,000 passengers daily.

It has 18 state-of-the-art super-automatic trains, fully air-conditioned, which will move without a driver, but with an attendant, and automatic doors.

At the end of 2025, the extension of the Metro to Kalamaria, with an additional 5 stations, will be put into use, while the plans include the extension to the western and northern districts of Thessaloniki.
