Wanting to strengthen the citizens’ sense of security, the municipality of Athens will implement it SafeAthens. This is an innovative application, which was developed by DAEM and enables anyone moving within the municipality’s boundaries to immediately report a series of potential emergency risks or natural disasters.

The application allows the user to notify by SMS (or by push notification):

  • His nearby contacts, providing his location and movement on a map (live tracking).
  • The police in cases of attack, sending the location, his movement on a map (live tracking) and his personal information.
  • His chosen contacts to confirm that he is well at all times, whether after he has overcome some danger or for a daily update.
  • His selected contacts for help, by shaking the device, with information about his location and movement on a map (live tracking).

In addition, the user can:

  • To activate the alarm, drawing the attention of those around him, in order to offer him help in an emergency. If the alarm remains activated for 30 seconds, it automatically sends an SMS or if the contacts have the application, it sends a push notification to the selected contacts, including its location and movement on a map (live tracking).
  • To make a virtual call, showing that he is talking to someone close to him. This function can be used proactively in cases of potential danger, as the user will appear to be not alone, creating the feeling that a “witness” is listening.

The application was presented today for the first time, during the meeting of the mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, with the president of the Federation of the Deaf of Greece, Konstantinos Simpsis, and the general secretary, Ioannis Stoufis.

“Security is the highest good, the inalienable right of every citizen. In this direction, we provide a complete digital protection shield free of charge”, emphasized Mr. Duke and added: “The SafeAthens application is also the first in Greece that also addresses our deaf fellow citizens. It is an important tool in order for them to feel more secure in their daily life. With the push of a button, the user can easily inform their loved ones and the relevant authorities by providing their exact geographical location and call for help».
