The Renault 5 was a B-class supermini city car, produced by the French carmaker Renault, between 1972 and 1996, in two generations. Its first generation was built from January 1972 to December 1984 (except for the 5 Turbo version, which arrived in December 1985) and was also known as the R5. Initially, it was only available as a 3-door hatchback, but in the summer of 1979 a 5-door hatchback version was added. Its second generation, also known as the Super 5 or Supercinq (Super 5), was produced from September 1984 to December 1996, in 3-door and 5-door hatchback versions. The Renault 5 was officially launched in the United States as a Le Car between 1976 and 1983.

Replaced by Renault Clio first generation, which went into mass production in May 1990 and was also a great success. After the introduction of the Clio, the production of the Super 5 was transferred to Slovenia, where it continued to be produced only in the 1.1 and 1.4 petrol versions, as well as the 1.6 diesel. Eventually, its production reached December 1996 for some markets as a cheaper alternative.
