The whale either migrated in search of food or to find a mate, it is estimated. And her journey is certainly admirable
A giant whale has surprised scientists as it embarked on a massive migration journey and traveled a record total distance of 13,000 kilometres.
Experts believe that this huge journey may be due to climate change depleting her food reserves or perhaps in a… odyssey for her find a partner, as reported by the BBC.
Ekaterina Kalashnikova from the Tanzania Cetaceans Program said the whale’s feat was “really impressive and unusual even for this species, which is known to migrate.”
The male whale appears to have broken a record for the distance a marine mammal can travel alone. Originally, it was photographed by a research vessel on Pacific coasts in Colombia in 2013. It was then located in a similar area the 2017 – and made it all the way to her opening Zanzibar, in the Indian Oceanthe 2022.
These views are far from each other 13,046 kilometers although scientists do not rule out that the distance is even greater!
Mapping her route was made possible thanks to Happywhalea platform that allows researchers, citizen scientists and whale watchers to record their sightings and then identify individual whales by their fins.
