Backed by a transformation program of 380 million pounds, the Halewood plant now has the capacity to produce 420,000 electric motors per year
With the start of production of a new generation of electric motors, Ford’s plant based in Halewood, M. of Britain registers today an extremely important milestone. These new units, which play a key role in Ford’s electric strategy, will power all-electric versions of the Puma – Ford’s most popular car in Europe – as well as the Transit Custom.
“Ford is a global American brand with deep roots in Europe, and Halewood has been a cornerstone of that heritage for 60 years. It is our first in-house manufacturing plant for electric vehicle components in Europe, which features state-of-the-art technology. Following a £380 million investment, Halewood has been transformed from a traditional transmission manufacturing facility to a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant,” said Kieran Cahill, Ford’s European Industrial Operations Vice-President.
The Halewood plant now has the capacity to produce 420,000 electric motors per year which will support Ford’s ambitious goals in electric mobility. By 2025, Ford will have nine electric models on European roads. Now, the new Puma Gen-E will join the Explorer, Capri, Mustang Mach-E and E-Tourneo Courier, completing Ford’s European range of electric cars, along with the commercial vehicles E-Transit, E-Transit Courier, E -Transit Custom and E-Tourneo Custom provided by Ford Pro.
The new all-electric Ford Puma Gen-E uses electric powertrains manufactured in Halewood and assembled at the Ford Otosan plant in Craiova. The electric Puma Gen-E enhances the model’s fun-to-drive character and evolves its distinctive exterior design, which has won the hearts of customers across Europe. The car’s electric motor, in addition to the 168 hp it produces offering excellent performance, also ensures an impressive efficiency amounting to just 13.1 kWh/100 km.
The new Ford Puma Gen-E can travel up to 376 kilometers on a full charge of the 43 kWh battery, so long journeys are possible. In the city, the autonomy reaches 523 km, which means that it will not need recharging for several days in the context of urban commuting.
