The sad incident happened in August 2016 in Katerini – Neighbors heard the cries of the newborn, so they notified the Fire Department and EKAV
A 34-year-old woman was sentenced to 5 years in prison, who abandoned her newborn child in the skylight of the apartment building where she lived.
She was found guilty by the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki for attempted infanticide, while her sentence was suspended on the condition that she be supervised by a social welfare officer.
The case took place in August 2016 in Katerini. Neighbors heard the newborn’s cries, so they notified the Fire Department and EMS. The little girl, only a few days old at the time, remained at the scene for over 24 hours. He was wrapped in rough cloths and at a depth of 1.5 meters from the bathroom window of the house, while when he was taken to the hospital the doctors found that he is in good health, given the conditions, as a police officer testified in the Court of Appeal.
The 34-year-old mother of a total of 5 children (of Albanian origin) confessed to her act, stressing, however, that she did not intend to kill the newborn. “I was confused,” she said in her apology, citing personal issues at the time. The police investigation revealed that the woman was being hosted by her parents and initially reported that she slipped in the bathroom.
The case was brought to the Court of Appeal after a prosecutor appealed the trial court’s decision, arguing that the 3-year (suspended) sentence imposed on her was low.
