A man’s body was found on a beach in Gavdos today and is expected to be picked up by a Coast Guard boat, so that it can be transferred to the Chania Hospital.

The body which is the 8th to be found, comes as continued body searchesboth in the sea area and on the beaches of Gavdos. The body was found on the beach of Agios Ioannis and is in the Port until the weather conditions allow the Port boat to moor at Karave.

Forensic procedures will be followed in order to make it known if the man is involved in the shipwreck with the immigrants that had happened southwest of the island on December 14.

The mayor spoke to APE BEE about unprecedented situations Lilian Stefanaki saying that: “A food freezer, which was the best we could do, leads us to ask the state to look seriously at the situation as it has developed in Gavdos. It is not possible to support what is happening, one policeman, two firefighters and one deputy mayor. This is all a very heavy burden.”
