Despite looking like a tsunami, scientists said it wasn’t as the sudden waves were caused by climate change
Waves of 6 meters rose suddenly yesterday Friday in Peru, hitting the northern coast of the country and causing widespread destruction.
The huge waves that destroyed beaches such as Máncora, Lobitos, El Ñuro and Cabo Blanco peaked in intensity on Saturday 28 December.
In the videos that have come to light, huge waves can be seen “swallowing” large fishing boats:
The tsunami destroyed spas, businesses and many small fishing boats, with videos on social media documenting the chaos, including damaged boats and flooded docks.

The Peruvian Navy has warned that these abnormal waves will persist until December 28, leading to the closure of ports in Piura and Toumba. Waves reached 6 meters, compounding problems from a recent oil spill.
