Four earthquakes occurred shortly after 10 this morning in the wider area of ​​Crete, while at 02:15 a seismic tremor measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in the sea area 28 kilometers south of Karpathos.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the new earthquakes were recorded as follows:

  • At 10:01 Greek time, a weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale was recorded.

The epicenter of the tremor is located in the sea area 19 km. East of Zakros, while the focal depth of the earthquake is estimated at 25.8 km.

  • One minute later, at 10:02 Greek time, two new earthquakes of magnitude 4.4 and 4.3 on the Richter scale followed.

The epicenter of the tremor is located in the sea area 24 km. and 29 km NE of Zakros, while their focal depth is estimated at 17.7 km. and 17.1 km respectively.

  • At 10:29 Greek time, a new earthquake of 3.4 degrees on the Richter scale followed, in the sea area of ​​15 Km. east of Zakros, with a superficial focal depth of 5km.

It should be noted that the tremors were recorded off Zakros, an area which often produces micro-earthquakes.
