The Thessaloniki Metro, which has changed, closes a month of operation on Monday radically the transport map of the city. The first report is overall positive, with figures showing a 10% reduction, on average, in the number of vehicles entering the centre, while the time for the new New Switzerland car park to operate is ticking down.

The people of Thessaloniki have seen their lives change and become easier almost a month after the operation of the metro, with comments ranging from positive to enthusiastic. “Now that the metro has opened, we clearly have more traffic, more people come” Filio Devetzi told SKAI.

Faster commutes, less hassle and economic respite for the local market with professionals already seeing signs of change. Many of them have their businesses near Metro stations and are seeing an increase in their clientele.

The operation of the Metro has brought considerable relief to the central axes of Thessaloniki. According to a survey by EKETA/IMET, in the period from November 25 to December 15, the number of cars decreased on average by around 10% per day in the city centre. Accordingly, a decrease of 14% is observed in the daily number of vehicles entering the city from the west, while a decrease of 6% for those entering from the east and neighboring municipalities of the city.

In the creation of a parking space at the New Switzerland station that will serve 400 vehicles the Municipality of Thessaloniki is proceeding with the support of the Region of Central Macedonia.

Extended meeting of the Thessaloniki Coordination Council for the Fly Over and the Metro

An enlarged meeting of the Coordination Council of Thessaloniki for the Fly Over regarding the conclusions for the first month of operation of the Metro will also take place on Monday at the Directorate of Thessaloniki. The meeting is convened by the Deputy Minister of the Interior (Macedonia-Thrace) Konstantinos P. Giulekas, while the appointment has been given at 9.30 am. in the “Nikolaos Martis” room of YMATH. The positive effects of the Metro on Thessaloniki’s traffic will be discussed and the regulations and measures in force due to the construction of the Fly Over will be reviewed.

The governor of Central Macedonia Athina Aidona, the president of K.E.D.E., have been invited to participate. and the mayor of Ampelokipi-Menemeni Lazaros Kyrizoglou, the president of the P.E.D. of Central Macedonia and the mayor of Pylaia Hortiatis Ignatios Kaitezidis, the mayors of the Urban Planning Complex of Thessaloniki, the presidents of the Chambers of Thessaloniki, the president of the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce, the administrations of O.A.S.TH., O.S.E.T.H., Egnatias Odou, T.E.E./T.K.M., TEF-Helexpo and O.L.Th., the heads of the Health Regions and KEPY-EKAB, the leadership of EL.AS., the Thessaloniki Traffic and Fire Service, representatives of IMET-EKETA and representatives of the project consortium.
