A third underground lake, the largest so far, was discovered in its subterranean bed Kifissou group of speleologists, at the meeting point with the stream of Echatia. As they estimate, the lake is larger than the other two that have been discovered in different parts of the underground bed. And they express concern about the extent of water undermining both the bottom and sidewall foundations. Everything shows that with the end of winter, the State will have to start seriously in the case, as no one wants to think about the consequences of a possible problem.

As stated in a related report by “Daily“, the undergrounding of Kifissos starts from the border of Nea Chalkidona with the Municipality of Athens and ends after 7 km of underground route at the height of the Nikaia-Renti junction. The new information about the condition of the underground tunnel comes to light after another exploration by three members of the amateur group of speleologists of “Geomythiki”. The team had thus far entered the underground bed of Kifissos from both sides, but both times had failed to traverse the entire underground route. And this is because he identified two underground lakes, at the junction of Kifissos and Podoniftis and one at the height of KTEL.

A question of stability

Having discovered two more lakes in the underground bed of Kifissos, the team of speleologists of “Geomythiki” estimates that the situation is worse than we think. “The issue of static is very serious and in our opinion the waters need to be pumped out and an assessment of the damage made by engineers. The underground pipeline in this third lake is in the worst condition we have ever seen.”

It is recalled that last August the Region of Attica signed a 1.2 million contract. euros with a contractor for the removal of garbage and debris from the closed river bed of Kifissos. It is estimated that the crew removed approximately 12,500 tons of haulable materials, as according to the Region, the underground bed had not been cleaned since 2002. It is also estimated that several illegal drainage connections of riverside businesses end up in the underground part of Kifissos.
