The coroner who wrote the expert report on the inquest found that the woman’s cervical vertebrae were broken by a powerful kick and not by falling into a hole, as the perpetrator claimed. “He had a broken neck and it was not from a fall, but from a blow. The girl was kicked with her foot. There were wounds all over his body. We saw there were other bumps so I called the police and said it wasn’t the fall in the canal“, said the medical examiner Professor Pavlos Pavlidis.

Eugenia, according to voria.gr, was so badly abused that she lost her spinal cord, resulting in her having no mobility in her limbs even if she lived, and in addition, she had a broken diaphragm and her breathing was supported mechanically. She also had bumps all over her body, some of which were old.

The police were immediately informed, and the 42-year-old was arrested. He is charged with five felonies, including attempted murder with intent in a calm state of mind. Despite his excuses, he was deemed remand and taken to Komotini prisons.

It is recalled that Eugenia, originally from Bulgaria, was working in a restaurant in Xanthi when she met the 42-year-old at the beginning of 2024 and in April of the same year she followed him and lived in his house, in the settlement of Ergani Rodopis. Their relationship quickly turned into a nightmare, as, according to complaints from her and her entourage, the man began to become violent from the first weeks of their acquaintance. Eugenia was removed from her social circle and transferred to the perpetrator’s village, where she was confined, deprived of her freedom and subjected to systematic abuse.

On October 23, 2024, the 40-year-old woman was transferred to the Sismanoglio Hospital of Komotini with severe injuries, including broken cervical vertebrae. Her condition was considered extremely serious, and she was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Alexandroupoli Hospital.
