A criminal group in Kozani managed to extort amounts of thousands of euros from elderly people, through telephone fraud, a member of which was arrested while driving yesterday, Sunday, January 5, while receiving money and valuables from a woman. This is a 49-year-old citizen, who – according to a police announcement – had the role of “collector” in this particular incident, while they are looking for the details of two of his accomplices, a man and a woman.
In the context of the same case, five more incidents were investigated, of which three were telephone fraud attempts, which were carried out on the same day in the morning against unsuspecting citizens in the wider area of ​​Kozani, and two were completed incidents, which occurred in October in the city of Katerinis and in November in Kilkis.
During the preliminary investigation it was established that in October the members of the group managed to deceive an 86-year-old resident of Katerini, from whom they obtained the sum of 1,100 euros, and in November an 88-year-old resident of the city of Kilkis, from whom they managed to take the sum of 30,000 euro.
The countdown for the team members seems to have started when they set their sights on a comparatively younger woman. In particular, yesterday a 52-year-old citizen received a phone call on her home landline from an unknown man, who pretended to be a doctor, asking her for a large sum of money, under the pretext that her daughter had been injured and needed money to undergo surgery immediately. In fact, an unknown woman pretended to be the woman’s daughter, begging for help to make their story even more convincing. The 52-year-old, perceiving the fraud, immediately informed the police officers of the Kozani Crime Investigation and Prosecution Department, who set up a special police team to locate and arrest the person who would receive the money.
The Department of Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes of Kozani continues the investigations for the identification of two unknown persons-accomplices, while their participation in other similar criminal acts is being examined, as well as the identification of any other victims. The arrested person, with the file filed against him, was taken to the prosecutor of Plimmeliodiki Kozani.
