The Attica Region’s stance on finding a definitive solution regarding waste management was reiterated by Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, attending, a short time ago, the relevant meeting held by the Minister of the Interior, Theodoros Livanios. He also said that the Region – and EDSNA – never made any decision to increase the burial fee.

As mentioned by Mr. Hardalias: “The Region of Attica comes to today’s meeting with specific positions on four very specific points. A topic has been created that does not concern us. And this is because the Region of Attica – and especially EDSNA – never made a decision to increase the burial fee. It is something provided by the relevant law, both the amount of the burial fee and the relevant procedure. In any case, the ESDNA had to take this decision, because the control mechanisms of specific ministries demanded – urgently – that the law be implemented and that the fee be entered in the budget”.

The governor of Attica called on the government to legislate in order to resolve the issue that has arisen, saying: “The Attica Region will not make either the tax collector or the politician the “carriage” of any government. The government should take specific positions on this issue and the issue that has arisen and resolve it with appropriate legislation.”

Referring to the mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, he said: “I do not intend for any reason to follow Mr. Haris Doukas in his radio-television – small-party character – “wanderings” in relation to this crucial issue. He himself knows exactly what the truth is and has chosen to tell blatant lies. My work is completely different. 4.5 million citizens in 66 neighborhoods of Attica require us, instead of being in the television windows, to work in the neighborhoods. This is my responsibility. That’s why people trusted me. And in this logic I continue. Yesterday from Piraeus, on the day of Lights, I made a wish. Light everywhere. I repeat it today. Light everywhere. The hiding is over.”

According to information from the Region of Attica, “The Region, EDSNA and PEDA have drawn up a joint plan of four points, in order to overcome the impasses caused by the measure. The Region is committed to presenting by the end of June, an integrated plan for the management of waste in the Basin, in accordance with the standards of good practices applied in Europe and internationally. For his part, Nikos Hardalias has openly stood in favor of the metropolitan management of waste in Attica, preferring the gasification of the final residue under strict environmental conditions, so that it can be used for energy.”
