Details about fatal car accident which took place in Chania at 3.15 this morning on Karamanli / Soudas Avenue, the General Regional Police Directorate of Crete announces.

Specifically, the 45-year-old driver who hit and killed the 22-year-old had tested positive in a breathalyzer test by the Chania Traffic Police.

In fact, the 45-year-old had consumed alcohol above the legal limit, as a result of which his keys were taken away and given to another driver who arrived at the point to pick him up. However, he got the keys to the vehicle again after that and was involved in the fatal crash with the 22-year-old victim who was driving a white Suzuki.

Also, a few hours earlier and specifically at 23:20 on Friday night, 100 received a call regarding the same vehicle and the same driver for dangerous driving and provocative behavior against another driver, in Courts Square.

According to the victim who called 100 himself, the 45-year-old overtook the vehicle illegally, and then got out of the vehicle, hitting another car with his fists, an incident that has been reported to the police.

It is noted that the 45-year-old was arrested while the incident is being investigated.

“In the evening hours of Friday, January 10, 2025, a driver was caught by police officers of the Chania Traffic Department, driving under the influence of alcohol, an act for which a case file was filed against him and the vehicle was immobilized, while he was also assessed the corresponding administrative fine.

Another occupant of the vehicle was tested negative for alcohol and given the keys with a performance report.

The offender after hours managed to retrieve the keys to the vehicle and was later involved in the fatal traffic accident. In fact, as it was found, he did not have a driver’s license as it had been revoked earlier for a traffic violation (driving under the influence of alcohol) by the T .T. BOAK”.

The competent Prosecutor of Chania was immediately informed about the incident and a case file was filed, while according to the General Regional Police Directorate of Crete, “the Internal Affairs Service of the Security Forces, after communicating with its Prosecutor, forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office of Chania, an information from the General Police Department of Crete, which became a recipient, for the further investigation of any criminal responsibilities of the police officers”.

Finally, the General Regional Police Director of Crete has ordered an Administrative Examination for the police officers involved.
