High-rise cat houses for strays created by volunteers
Multi-storey wooden cat houses, with blankets inside for the winter months, were built by animal-loving volunteers in Glyfada, who daily clean, groom and feed about 40 stray cats that make up the city’s cat colony.
“It’s a small village for stray cats. I built one of the multi-story cathouses here with a carpenter and every day together with four other people we take care of the cats. Some we feed them, some others clean them, while most of them we have also taken for sterilization. I have been dealing with these cats every day for three years,” explains Dimitris, one of the volunteers.
As he emphasizes, “everyone has their roles, I bring the dry food, a lady comes and with the mop cleans all the nests one by one, the fishermen bring them little fish and feed them and another gentleman brings the canned goods”.
“Most of these cats are elderly. In fact, one of them who is sick, we have arranged for a veterinarian to come here to examine her. The municipality is aware of our project, as it is hosted on its premises. However, there are not many of us who are actively involved, we do not have a close relationship with each other, we just share our love for stray cats. We only meet here and that by chance. We are united by our common goal, to take care of cats in the best possible way”, he points out.
The Cat Colony is an attraction for visitors to the area
Elli and Konstantinos discovered the cat village with the “apartment houses”, as they say, by chance during a walk and from that moment, they often visit the place to enjoy the companionship of the friendly four-legged friends.
“We see them lying in their houses, enjoying the sun, it’s wonderful to be among them. Caress them and enjoy them. Well done to the citizens who are so actively involved and take care of the stray kittens, they even offer them good food as we saw and their nests are always clean”, they underline.
The municipality of Glyfada is a companion in their voluntary effort
The mayor of Glyfada, Giorgos Papanikolaou, speaking to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, explained that the municipality supports every such effort, “the specific cat colony that is maintained and cared for voluntarily by citizens, is also supported by us and the municipality is next to these efforts and in fact , provides medical care to cats who need it. Thousands of cats throughout Glyfada have been sterilized, the first attempt made, at this particular point, was made by the municipality with the construction of the first cat house and then, the citizens helped to maintain and develop it. The municipality has helped to make things more organized, we also offer food and what we are trying to do is for the colony to coexist harmoniously in the area with the residents and everyone who is active in the area.”
“It deserves a big thumbs up to those citizens who daily take care of stray animals, whether cats or dogs that exist in our municipality. These people dedicate their free time for our four-legged friends and this is of great value to us”, emphasized the mayor of Glyfada.
