With the presence of the regional governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, and the mayor of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni, Grigoris Constantellos, the work of a critical anti-flood project in Eastern Attica, the arrangement of the Corbi stream, with a budget of 26 million euros, began.

The arrangement will be carried out in a total length of 2,840 meters, from Varis – Koropiou Avenue to its estuary, on the beach of Varkiza and is expected to be completed by December 2026. The project is financed by the Cohesion Fund through the Operational Program “Transport Infrastructures , Environment and Sustainable Development”.

Mr. Hardalias, referring to the importance but also the evolutionary course of the project, pointed out that “The need to settle the stream arose from the floods of 1993. It was first studied in 2007, the tender procedures started in 2017 and contracted by previous regional authorities, but along the way it was interrupted, because it was not very important studies had been completed.

From the first moment we assumed responsibility for the administration of the Region of Attica, in collaboration with the mayor and his excellent services, we prioritized the need to complete the studies, to overcome bureaucratic procedures and thus an extremely important project, which is part of a zone of high flood risk, to proceed at an immediate pace. Our goal is to complete as quickly as possible. We are working with all the relevant agencies involved (archaeology, ministries, etc.) and we believe that by the end of 2026, it will have been handed over to the citizens. It is an extremely important project for the safety of the people of the wider area. The arrangement of the specific stream is part of a holistic plan that the Region of Attica has put in place to deal with the consequences of climate change. We are focusing on upgrading critical infrastructure and shielding the vulnerable areas of the Basin, ensuring the safety of our citizens and the protection of their property.”

For his part, the mayor of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni Gr. Constantellos thanked the regional governor for the study he showed, so that this project that “tended to turn into a local bridge of Arta” could be restarted and completed as soon as possible. “We have been fighting this stream for 35 years. It started, it stopped, it started again, it stopped again, and I hope this time we can deliver a perfect hydraulic project, because today the Corbi stream is the Achilles heel of the municipality of Vari, Voula, Vouliagmeni”, he pointed out.

The project includes important interventions that will strengthen the resilience of the wider area against the consequences of the climate in order to offer effective protection to the lives and property of the residents for whom for decades it has been a focus of concern as it often became the cause of catastrophic floods, with consequences on infrastructure houses, rural areas and roads.
