Over half a demand for electricity (50.5%), in 2024 was covered by renewable energy, a percentage that would be even higher if there were no “green” production cuts which reached 3.3% of the total RES energy produced last year.

These come from the Greentank report on power generation in 2024, a year that was also “marked” by the country’s conversion to export.

In particular, the report states, inter alia:

-With 28,751 GWH, pure energy (RES and large hydroelectricity together) in 2024 was the highest of the decade, increased by 14.4% compared to 2023 (25,138 GWh). In fact, it exceeded 311 GWH the power generation from the three fossil fuels together (28,439 GWh).

-The net energy in 2024 covered just over half a demand (50.5%), while its share of electricity was lower (50.3%). RES (wind and photovoltaic) dominated the demand for 44.4%, while large hydroelectricity had a 6.1%share.

-As far as the installed power of wind and photovoltaic is concerned, progress continued in 2024. In fact, according to the latest available data from DEPEPEP (October 2024) and DEDDIE (August 2024), the power installed by photovoltaic (8.93 GW ) has already surpassed the ESEC’s target for 2025 (8.5 GW). Winds were developed at a lower rate between 2023-2024 (+2.4%), compared to the previous year 2022-2023 (11.6%). According to ELETAEN data for 2024, the total installed wind power by 2024 reached 5,355 GW.

-The share of RES in demand in 2024 would be even greater if there were no cuts. According to the provisions of the consolidated planning process published daily by ADMIE, in 2024 860 GWH were cut, accounting for 3.3% of the total renewable energy produced in the same period.

-In 2024 net exports reached 307 GWh. Since the 1900s when there is a relevant Eurostat data, this happened only once again, in 2000 with just 11 GWh.
