Schools are normally opened in Santorini, Anafi, Ios and Amorgos after discontinuation of courses decided on the safety of children, on the sidelines of successive seismic activity in the Cyclades lately.

More specifically, at the seismologists’ meeting, which was completed shortly before, it was decided to remove the measures and consequently the return of students to the classroom.

The meeting

The permanent Special Scientific Committee for the Estimation of the Seismic Risk and Reduction of Seismic Risk and the Standing Scientific Committee for Monitoring of the Greek Volcanic Arch of OASP today met 27/02/2025 (18:00), in order to examine issues related to the current and in the current area of the current area of Thira.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in the presence of Minister Vassilis Kikilia, Deputy Minister Evangelos Tournas of the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou, Secretary General of the Rehabilitation Lieutenant General Michael Klouva as well as representatives of the leadership of the Fire Brigade.

After discussion between committees and the presentation and examination of all data so far, the following are unanimously formulated:

The seismic sequence in the marine area of Anhydros between Thira and Amorgos, as described in the previous announcements of the committees, has a further recession and has been maintained in the last two weeks at low levels.

Public buildings, based on checks so far, have shown very good behavior in seismic loads.

On the basis of the above, the committees are recommending the reopening of school units from Tuesday, March 4, 2025, however, it is recommended that school units are recommended to adhere to the precautionary measures for the earthquake, as the risk of some relatively stronger vibrations, although significantly reduced, has not been reduced.

Committees remind the following measures:

Citizens must:

– Avoid approach to abandoned buildings.

– Avoid access and stay in the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfos and Paleo Port of Fira.

– To remove dangerous elements of non -structural vulnerability in their buildings (heavy honest objects, suspended ceilings, etc.) and the emptying of the waters in swimming tanks (pools).

– Choose safe routes when moving to urban fabric and provincial road network, especially at points where there are intense morphological slopes and are likely to develop landslide phenomena.

– Remove directly from coastal areas in the event of a strong seismic vibration.

The committees were informed of the study “Operational Actions to Reduce Laid Risk in the Caldera of the Santorini Volcanical Complex” and suggest the adoption of the framework of appropriate actions to limit the landslide risk.

The committees will meet again on Friday, March 7th.
