A PPC cables hit a silver pelican, causing him to be seriously injured and in danger of being disabled.

The Luke, as the Silver Pelican is called by a transmitter, were found by members of the Prespa Protection Company (EPP) under a high -voltage pillar of PPC near Amyntaio Key, with severe burns of electric shock.

Immediately transferred to the care center of the “Action for Wild Life” team in Thessaloniki, where he is hospitalized.

However, according to the EPP, thanks to his transmitter who was stable at one point, Luke found himself and has a second chance.

The recent incident is on the fifth recorded case of a transmitter silver pelican impact on electricity transport cables, as evidenced by the data of the DPA. Specifically, three deaths have been recorded (Giannitsa, Pervali and Büyük Menderes, Turkey) and two serious injuries (Heimaditis and recently in the Key Amyntaio).

How was Luke injured

This bird – nesting in Prespa and is monitored by a transmitter from 2023 – headed to the Amyntaio lakes to search for food. This movement is a common practice for pelicans at this time, as warmer waters in these lakes favor the concentration of fish near the surface, facilitating their food.

On his return to Prespa, the pelican managed to reach the area of Florina, but according to the EPP, probably due to the fog that prevailed in the area that day, he changed the course and returned to the lakes of Amyntaio.

On the route it hit cables between high voltage pillars, which once again highlighted the serious dangers of birds in low visibility conditions, as they are forced to fly under limited visibility at lower heights, which increases the risk of impacts in obstacles and inputs.
