Athanasios Fassas introduced the autologous hematopoietic cell transplants to the hematology section of Papanikolaou Hospital for the first time in Greece

Who was Athanasios Fassas
Athanasios Fassas was born in Thessaloniki. He studied medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and continued his studies in hematology, oncology and immunology at the Institute of Oncology and Immunogenetics in Paris. He specialized in marrow transplantation at the Cantonic Hospital of Basel of Switzerland and was involved in marrow freezing techniques and automotives at the Saint-Antoine Hospital in Paris.
When he returned to Greece he worked at the AUTH Educational Pathology Clinic at the “Hagia Sophia” With the launch of the NHS, he took over as director of the newly established hematology clinic of the “G. Papanikolaou »in 1986. Athanasios Fassas was the first director of the hematology department from 1986 to 2010. He introduced autologous hematopoietic cell transplants to the hematology section of Papanikolaou Hospital for the first time in Greece.

Since 2003 Athanasios Fassas in collaboration with the Department of medical genetics of University of Washingtondealt with the application of therapeutic gene therapy therapeutic protocols to treat Mediterranean anemia-customity and other congenital anemia as well as the transplant disease against the host, the most dangerous complication of bone marrow transplantation.
