Faced with a series of felonies are the 14 arrested for participating in one of the three circuits of ancient archeology that ELAS dislocated in northern Greece.

Members of this circuit were brought before the Thessaloniki Public Prosecutors and were charged, while the remaining 9 are taken to the Prosecutor’s Office of Serres.

The 14 are prosecuted for the following acts: criminal organization, embezzlement of monuments, possession of explosives, illegal excavation and archaeological research, acceptance and disposal of monuments, illegal export of cultural goods, illegal possession and use of metal detector, theft of monument.

These were referred to apologize to the 3rd Special Investigator of Thessaloniki, from where they received deadlines and remain in custody.

Reports indicate that police investigations into the alleged action of the circuits began last September.

They are mainly “hunters” of coins and other archaeological finds that made illegal excavations even near archaeological sites in northern Greece. The same information says that they used metal detectors and other excavations, explosives (TNT) in addition to metal detectors.

They also used code names in their telephone communications to not be perceived. And ancient artifacts seem to be promoted to overseas markets, gaining profits from their illegal action.
