From today Monday and for four weeks, by April 11, 2025this year’s exams will be held in Greece Pisa programfor the international evaluation of students, of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OOAS).

In total, 245 schools will participate in Greece, of which 230 public and 15 private and, according to the Ministry of Education’s calculations, all pupils and pupils expected to participate more than 9,000. It is also noted that the sample schools were selected by “strict sampling methods” to “ensure their representativeness at the level of pupils and schools across the country”.

The PISA research is internationally renowned for the data it provides, regarding the level of participants and the educational systems of participating countries. The basic subjects in which 15 -year -old pupils are examined are mathematics, text understanding and natural sciences, and during the latest exams (Pisa 2022) an additional field, creative thought was added.

The PISA 2025 study will evaluate the knowledge and skills of 15 -year -old pupils in more than 80 countries and in new fields, except for the three basics, such as: English and learning in the digital world.

Greece’s performance

During these latest exams, Pisa 2022, Greece has fallen in its average performance in basic subjects, recording, in fact, the lower levels it has ever recorded in the research. This decline is a continuation of students’ lower performance in understanding text and natural sciences since 2009.

As for the scope of creative thought, Greece was ranked in the group of countries that are performing lower than the average performance in the OECD countries. More specifically, Greece was in 38th place, among 64 countries, having 27 points (33 points).

New directions and support of schools and teachers

The results of PISA 2022 launched a series of moves by the Ministry of Education, with the aim of promoting students’ creative thinking, as well as supporting schools and teachers involved in conducting the research.

More specifically, the set of measures announced included the inclusion of literary books and the development of a theme bank in the logic of questions and philosophy of PISA exams, as well as the planning of training for teachers in pedagogical and teaching practices.

In addition, the ministry has upgraded the school units to take part in the PISA 2025 exams this year, as well as the financial support of teachers who will assist in their conduct.

“Mr. Pisa” in Greece

In Greece, the “architect” of the PISA program and OSAS training and skill director Andreas Schleicher was in the beginning of last week.

During his two -day stay in Athens, Monday and Tuesday, Mr Slaicher had meetings not only with the leadership of the Ministry of Education, but also with the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which demonstrates the importance specifically given to the Greek side for what is being given to his 20s and 20 years.

According to information from the Maximus Palace, during the meeting of Messrs. Mitsotakis and Pierrakakis with Mr. Slaicher “The importance of reforms implemented in Greece over the last five years has been highlighted”, such as, inter alia, the integration of technology into the lesson, the tightening of the framework for the ban on the use of mobile phone and the school.

In addition, during the meeting of the leadership of the Ministry of Education with Mr Slaicher, who had preceded, ways were discussed in which the OECD data for education can improve the educational reality in Greece.

It is worth noting that Mr Slaicher is behind the creation and supervision of the PISA program, while his experience – more than 20 years – in the field of data analysis and counseling for educational policies and practices. In fact, in 2018 he published the book “World Class: How a 21st Class: How to Build A 21st-Century School System) is built, which is available free of charge online on the OECD website. In the book, Mr. Slaicher analyzes his perspective on innovation in education, the importance of equality in it, as well as the ways in which an educational system can be successfully reformed.

In December 2023, on the occasion of the publication of the results of PISA 2022, in an article on a Greek financial website, Mr Slaicher made a brief analysis of how he believes that a Greek state should be designed by a Greek state that will respond to the reality of the 21st century.

“In today’s globalized economy, where artificial intelligence and digitization quickly remodel the world, it is vital for teaching and learning to innovate to ensure that education remains in constant relationship with the above developments,” Mr Slaicher wrote.

He suggested that “educational institutions should have more real autonomy to achieve better results for students” and noted that in Greece, 1% of students are studying at a school where principals have the primary responsibility for hiring teachers, over the average of 60%. “Improving the quality of teaching should also be a priority, including improving the training of teachers and their professional development,” he emphasized.
