Faced with unprecedented under -staffing is the General Hospital. Samos – Doctors and Nursing Staff “Endance SOS” – Skai.gr’s detailed report
Myriam Kiasos
“Danger bell” is ringing medical and nursing staff at the General Hospital. Samos because of its serious and ever -increasing under -recruitment that brings the daily life of the island to the day -to -day life.
In Samos in 2025, for example, “you cannot be a child”, since although a place that hosts 32,642 permanent residents, it is served by only one pediatrician.
Of course, it is equally difficult for those who need cardiac surgery, another specialized surgery or have the misfortune of a serious injury since, despite the intensive efforts of doctors and nurses who typically say that “we do everything except heart and head”, and human shortages.
A typical example of the above is the collapse of the only pediatrician in the hospital, who in August last year ended up being hospitalized, behind continuous and long -term on -call.
The problems of under -staffing and inadequacy of media and infrastructure in public health structures are not a treaty that is found only in Samos since more or less similar situations are recorded in other areas of Greece, beyond urban centers.
However, the geographical location and extent of the island, the increased needs, as they arise from both tourism and migration, combined with the fact that the General Hospital. Samos is called upon to serve beyond the indigenous population and other islands such as Ikaria, Leros, Patmos, Fourni, Agathonisi, etc., make it urgent to find drastic solutions, as at least in a new circle of discussions that have been intended to be in a new cycle of discussions.
The data
According to the data set by skai.gr In its possession, with regard to the hospital staffing chart, only 29 doctors are covered by the 76 doctors’ seats, and despite the fact that 32 more specialized doctors are provided on the island only two.
The lack of a pediatrician is clearly the largest “thorn” as although staffing with four doctors is foreseen, only one position was covered by the pediatrician who collapsed due to exhaustion.
As a result, medical care of children is done by individuals, pensioners working with a service block, and voluntary services are also salvageable.
In any case, there are many days when there is no pediatrician in the hospital.
At the same time, while in the pathological wing provided by five doctors, they are essentially two, as one doctor is on sick leave.
As far as ICU is concerned, there are six beds and only one intensificationologist, with other on -call on -calls covered by military doctors.
Especially for on -call on -calls, there is a serious problem as the needs are covered with over -dimensions and internal movements, which involve the creation of new gaps.
Such as describes at the president of hospital workers, Stamatis Filippisthe fact that each doctor, for example, corresponds to five on -calls inside and five other – where he is on alert to go to the hospital if they call him – the days cannot be covered when for example in a department there are two doctors.
Similarly, there is also serious problems for the Emergency Department, for which a notice has never been made for the four planned organic positions, while noting that only a military doctor is “running” the Department of Chemotherapy voluntarily.
The situation is also difficult in the radiogenic department, which is theoretically the largest of the hospital, as it is staffed by only two doctors, with a long waiting list for axial ultrasound and even critical diagnostic checks, such as mammograms, transferred to up to a year later.
It is worth noting that there has been no recent testimony on the island on the island, as confirmed by the testimonies of residents, nor private, magnetic resonance imaging.
So citizens and health workers are once again posting their hopes on the announcements that have been made lately, talking about years.
The situation is also difficult in surgery, which despite its satisfactory staffing is “suffering” by anesthesiologists since although three are predicted, they serve two and will soon leave one.
All this while there are no basic specialties in the hospital, such as an otolaryngologist, gastroenterologist, ophthalmologist, endocrinologist, dermatologist and neurosurgeon, and it should be emphasized that he was never a psychiatrist.
However, further staffing of nursing staff is also necessary since, as Mr Filipis says, they need about 30.
Last but not least, in terms of managing the daily work of work, the lack of other staff in paramedical specialties, to EKAB rescuers (for example throughout the island, in the absence of drivers, only two ambulances), in auxiliary services, in the call center and in the field of vital sector.
“We are making great mobilizations to announce jobs,” he summarizes, stressing that despite the announcements, they have not yet been recruited and therefore go to the capital at the end of the month by demanding a meeting with the Minister of Health.
At the same time, in mobilizations, they are expected to proceed, According to skai.gr, according to skai.gr, and the Parents and Guardians Associations of the island, expressing their anxiety about children’s safety.
‘Cry of anxiety’ by doctors
The extremely adverse conditions, under which the General Hospital operates. The medical world of the island also emphasizes, quoting events and examples, at skai.gr.
“Wherever you catch the situation, the situation is unsustainable,” says Samos Hospital President Andreas Efstratoudakis, referring to a dramatic situation, while pointing out that the work of permanent staff is necessarily called upon to assist the agricultural doctors.
Mr. Efstratoudakis even describes that the employees are consistently reported on the pathogenesis of hospital operation, with memos, letters and appeals being successive, while newer developments in what is going to be in the future.
“The hospital is like a bomb fell,” he adds, among other things, to comment, in addition to the problem of under -staffing, and the images of piles of jackets and building materials outside the Emergency Department, who, according to the report, are at the same time at the same time in building.
Requested … motivation
Apart from the given urgent needs for staffing, what is undoubtedly concerned is the other thing that it is possible to eventually fill these serious gaps and in particular how sufficient the motives are sufficient for a physician who works for a urban center, not only in a urban center but not only in the urban center.
This is because, according to Samos Hospital Governor Ioannis Hadjikonstantis, although positions for the hospital are expected to be announced, no interest in the already “open positions” are not stated.
Mr. Hadjikonstantis, having acquired a global image of the conditions, talks about an easy situation, characteristically observing that especially for critical neuralgic areas “failure from success is a line”.
It is no coincidence that, in particular, referring to the situation in the Pediatric Clinic, which notes that it is a problem of years, he stresses that he has not been closed “from patriotism”.
At the same time, it speaks of a series of incentives and facilities offered to doctors to serve on the island, such as bonus, coverage of transition and residence expenses, pointing out that the problems concern very specific areas while clearly the equation should also be calculated that with legislative intervention.
In any case, the above seems to be not enough, as the president of the Samos Medical Association, Stratos Kapolis, who confirms the prostitute’s data, is observed, it is difficult for a doctor who perceives the under -staffing and leaves for him, to return to them,
The requested
Given the circumstances, it would be utopian to wait for the immediate and definitive resolution of the problems and taking into account the position of both the Association of Workers and the Hospital Doctors’ Union and the Medical Association is the announcement of all vacant organic positions on the basis of the old.
In particular, they propose coverage of critical specialties that will immediately reduce the volume of work so that doctors are not discouraged to express interest in working in hospital, brave financial incentives and notices that will remain permanently “open” to applications.
