“Our priority is to prevent and protect archaeological sites, monuments and museums,” said Lina Mendoni
The Ministry of Culture proceeds to install a modern fire protection system at the Archaeological Museum and the Tomb Cemetery Vranato Marathonin the context of its strategic planning for the protection of archaeological sites and monuments from the impact of climate change.
In Vrana, next to the Marathon Archaeological Museum, lies the Middle Bronze Age cemetery. Includes Middle Bronze Age tombs (2000 – 1600 BC), while some of them were in use during the Mycenaean period (14th – 12th centuries BC). The Archaeological Museum building was renovated and acquired a new exhibition in 2004 as part of the Athens Olympic Games. In the same context, the protective shelter, which covers the Tombs I-III, was built.
The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated: “We are increasingly experiencing the extreme phenomena of climate change. Our priority is to prevent and protect archaeological sites, monuments and museums from the impact of the climate crisis. Throughout the territory, projects and flood fires are evolving or maturing. The Archaeological Museum, as well as the cemetery, in Vrana, Marathon, are rescued by particularly important findings, whose security is advisable to strengthen. The museum today has a fire detection system and portable firefighting means. According to the applicable study, prepared by the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of East Attica in cooperation with the Fire Service, the site is treated as a single whole. It is foreseen to install a permanent water supply network and the location of the Fire Brigade at a point invisible and compatible with the environment of the archaeological site. The installation does not alter the physiognomy of the archaeological site, the monuments and the museum. On the contrary, it contributes to their overall protection in the event of a fire and enhances the sense of security and employees’ safety. “
Based on the applicable study, the project, among other things, includes:
- Permanent water supply, which extends to the Museum. The complex (FPS) includes fire extinguishing pumping station and water tank.
- Thirty Fire Brigades located around the area, as well as four in the museum -two on the ground floor and two in the basement.
- Perimeter network, totaling 1,171m long. with four branches, to cover the entire space with fire brigades.
- Enhance the museum’s fire safety with portable fire extinguishers, lighting and security marking, fire detection and manual fire announcement, as well as a second escape exit.
