A serious incident occurred today, Friday in the archaeological site of Knossos, as collapsed a fresco section dating from the 1960s.

According to neakriti.gr, this is about copy of the former restoration of Arthur Evans, which for decades is considered an integral part of the monument and a symbol of the Minoan artistic heritage.

At the time of the collapse, about 300 visitors were inside the archaeological site of Knossos. Reports say the incident occurred shortly before 12 noon, and the decision to evacuate the site had already been taken due to the strong winds blowing in the area.

The frescoes – made of plaster – consisted of three parts. According to preliminary estimates, two of them were detached and fell, resulting in severe damage and break.

The collapse was recorded in the Eastern Wing of the Palace, which has already been excluded and will remain closed until younger, for safety and evaluation of the damage.

According to neakriti.gr, the Ministry of Culture has already been informed of the incident and, according to the same sources, has been requested immediate rehabilitation of the spot to protect the rest of the monument and to prevent further damage.

It is noted that the original is located in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

As it became known earlier today, a precautionary evacuation of the site was made, which was decided due to the stormy winds affecting the area. The Ministry of Culture had announced the temporary shutdown from 1:00 to 4:00 pm to ensure the security of visitors and staff.
