A wide meeting was held at noon on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the City Hall of Serres, with the aim of detecting uranium in some water supply areas of the municipality.

The meeting was chaired by the Mayor of Serres and President of DEYA Serres, Barbara Mitriaga, representatives of health authorities, technical advisers, competent officials and representatives of the Serres Regional Unit.

According to Mrs Mitliaga, on April 9, 2025, DEYA Serres received a circular from the Ministry of Health, calling on the water services to begin the necessary checks in order to achieve complete harmonization with the European Directive by January 12, 2026. Mrs Mitliaga emphasized that the checks were carried out on the whole network of DEYA Serres, urban fabric and villages, stressing that the water is proven clean and no concern. He also pointed out that from the very first moment he informed the citizens responsibly and transparently about the results of the measurements, without hiding any information. “We call on all competent bodies and the local community, in close cooperation, so that the issue can be effectively tackled by coordination, information and responsibility,” he said.

It is recalled that as of Thursday, May 22, 2025, the use of water in cooking in the areas is prohibited:

  • 1) Melenikiotika, north of Delphi Street, above the junction of Papastefanou Street.
  • 2) Euthalia Adam Street, above the junction of Papazoglou Street.
  • 3) Provincial Road Serres – Chrysopigi.
  • 4) Chrysopigi settlement.
  • 5) Settlement of Metochi.
  • 6) DK Lefkona.
  • 7) DK Christ.

For the approximately 2,000 water supply that is affected by the prohibition of water use of the above areas, DEYA Serres has taken the following measures immediately:

  • Zero water consumption charge for as long as the problem is restored.
  • Pure water supply: The Municipality of Serres undertakes the refueling of tanks with clean drinking water for citizens in the affected areas.
  • Special care for schools and vulnerable citizens: schools affected by the problem will distribute bottled drinking water. The same will apply to vulnerable fellow citizens through the “Home Aid” program and the social structures of the Municipality.

We are in contact and communication with all stakeholders. More specifically, with the MPs of the Serres Regional Unit, with the Vice -Mayor of Serres and with the representatives of professionals to find comprehensive solutions in order to tackle the problem.
