In fact, the decision will be influenced by the position of the FDA, which has been called to consider Pfizer’s application for approval of the fourth installment for people over 65 years of age.
According to Evangelos Manolopoulos, Professor of Pharmacology at the Democritus University of Thrace, Pfizer bases its application on data from Israel, where the fourth dose is given to people over 60 years of age and to medical staff. According to these data, the fourth dose restores the level of antibodies achieved with the third dose and reduces the chance of infection with the virus.
“In our country, the administration from the age of 60 and over can be considered. In fact, it seems that the decisions will coincide with a further relaxation of the measures that are in force now to prevent the spread of the virus “, Mr. Manolopoulos emphasizes and adds that this decision may be extended to people with chronic diseases and high risk of serious illness regardless of age.
Asked when the rest of the population will be called to be vaccinated again, the professor of Pharmacology points out that “everything contributes to the fact that we should prevent it next autumn, when the next outbreak of Covid-19 is expected. However, the prevailing scenario, if the pandemic continues as it is today and a new strain does not appear with completely different characteristics that will overturn the plans, is towards the end of summer with the beginning of autumn we are all called to be vaccinated with an improved version of the vaccine which will have a wider range of protection and will cover known variants.
